K-ON!! Season 2 episode #5

Summary

Azusa, Ui and Jun spend their time together while the seniors of their school visit Kyōto for the school field trip.

Plot

Yui forgot her camera

Ui reminds Yui of her camera.

The morning of her sister's field trip, Ui is eating toast with honey for breakfast while thinking of her sister, Yui. Yui and the rest of her class are currently on their way to Kyōto for a school field trip, leaving Ui to wonder if Yui forgot anything. As she double-checks Yui's room, she finds Yui's left behind camera. Ui takes a picture of it with her cellphone to send to Yui, wishing her a safe trip and telling her to have Mio and the others take pictures for her.

Serious LMC

Azusa's image of a serious Light Music Club

At school, Ui shows her friend Azusa Yui's text message about her passing Mount Fuji, making her jealous about having to stay behind. Azusa then starts to nag about Yui's lazy and airheaded side, leading Ui to ask her if she wishes Yui was stricter. At first, Azusa agrees, but her mental image of a serious Light Music Club seems so bizarre that she quickly drops it. At that moment, their friend Jun shows up.

Jun teasing Ui and Azusa

Ui and Azusa defend the club's image.

After reading Yui's text message, Jun shows them the one she got from the Jazz Club's seniors with the request to take care of the club's freshmen, impressing Azusa with the dependability of the Jazz Club seniors. Right at that moment, Yui sends Azusa another text message with the request to take care of the club's turtle Ton, embarrassing her. Reading said message, Jun imagines the club playing "Kick the can" every day while abandoning their instruments, leading Ui and Azusa to furiously deny that the club was actually that bad.

Jun with the legendary chocolat roll

Jun with the legendary snack

Afterwards, the three are about to buy lunch when Jun spots the legendary "Golden Chocolate Roll", a rare snack that is usually bought out by the school's senior classes since only three are made every day. Ui is about to take a picture of Jun with the snack when she gets another message from Yui asking Ui to retrieve the lunch box she left at school.

Ui crying

Ui crying after realizing that Yui won't be coming back for the next two days.

Because of Yui's request, the three enter unknown territory, the classroom of Class 3-2. The lunch box is quickly found, so the three decide to stay a bit longer. Jun sits down in Mio's seat to feel a bit like her role model bassist. Her joy becomes confusion after she finds a scary drawing Ritsu left in Mio's desk as a prank. Ui copies Jun by sitting at her sister's seat, leading Jun to ask her if she won't feel lonely when her beloved sister won't be home for two days. Ui realizes this fact for the first time and begins to tear up over knowing that her sister won't be home tonight. In a bid to keep Ui happy, Azusa and Jun promise to stay the night with her instead.

Jun's pig prank

Jun's prank

Afterwards, the trio visits the Jazz Club. As Jun is about to explain the strong pressure to succeed in the club that comes from its many members, she has to return to their classroom, realizing she forgot her bass there. Left alone in the clubroom, Azusa and Ui are caught off guard when two of the club's freshmen show up. While trying to justify their presence, the freshmen reveal that they both know and look up to Azusa because of Jun, much to the guitarist's embarrassment. When Jun returns, she convinces Azusa to teach the freshmen a thing or two. Noticing that the freshmen have trouble playing all their chords because of their flexibility, Azusa teaches them finger stretching techniques, which everybody except Azusa and Ui have problems with. Suddenly, Jun worries everybody by proclaiming that she can't move her fingers, but it turns out to be nothing more than a prank that falls completely flat.

In the evening, Jun visits the Hirasawa household and offers a box with donuts as a gift. Ui shows her the extravagant dinner she prepared for them, astounding Jun. Azusa shows up at the moment and brings sushi as a present, leading Jun to worry that her gift is inadequate between Ui's dinner and Azusa's sushi.

Sleepover at Ui's home

The sleepover at Ui's house

After the meal, Azusa notices that Jun has taken a bite from every single donut and, with some convincing from Jun, tries the chocolate one herself. Ui gets another message from her sister with a picture of a pillow fight Tsumugi started. Bored, Jun then rolls towards the two, bumping Azusa's head in the process.

Ui and azusa

Ui and Azusa about to read Yui's message

Not much later, Jun is already fast asleep in Ui's bed. Ui and Azusa lay down as well and talk about the senior's trip, not wanting to sleep quite yet. Azusa frets over being left behind and imagines her senpais coming back from their trip with no souvenir for her. To cheer her up, Ui proposes that they go somewhere fun the next day, and they agree on visiting the zoo right as another message from Yui reaches Ui's mobile phone. Curiously, the two open it to see that Yui sent them the word "skull" with nothing else, rather ominously.

Jun's hair problem

Jun has problems with her hair.

The next morning, Jun wakes Azusa by kicking her in the face while she's still sleeping. It turns out to be a rainy day, ruining the plan to go to the zoo. After brushing their teeth, the girls talk about each other's hair. It turns out that neither Azusa nor Jun are fond of their hair since Azusa thinks it gives her the visage of a traditional japanese doll and Jun has problems with its curliness every morning, especially when it rains.

Azusa rain

Azusa wants to do something.

Since the rain made the zoo plan a bust, the group is left with nothing to combat their boredom. Jun is of no help, reading a manga without paying attention to the others. When she finishes it, she asks Ui for the sixth volume over Azusa commenting that Jun will lose her friends if she keeps behaving like that. Searching for the sixth volume, all three girls enter Yui's room, but only volume seven can be found, so Jun proposes going to a book store. The idea is rejected because of the rain, so Jun gives up and falls on Yui's bed as Azusa gets a new message from Yui with a picture of the group at the Iwatayama Monkey Park. Tired of doing nothing, Azusa tries to encourage the others to go somewhere once and for all, but Jun is already sleeping again.

Azusa and Jun at the batting cage

Azusa and Jun at the batting cage

Eventually, the three end up at an amusement hall batting cage. At first, nobody is skilled enough to hit a ball until Ui overhears a man in an adjacent cage discussing batting techniques with a child, giving her the information she needs to hit a home run. Azusa and Jun express jealousy over how quickly Ui picks up skills like her sister does, confusing Ui. Ui then collects her prize, a giant doll of a turtle which reminds Azusa that she forgot to take care of the club's turtle, Ton, at school.

The first light of the day

The rain finally stopped.

The girls rush to school and borrow the keys to the clubroom from the school's security guard. Ton is still fine, and Azusa is able to feed him without incident. Jun then finds the sixth volume of the manga on one of the club's shelves. Azusa is still unhappy about the rain, so Jun suggests a jam session to cheer her up. Azusa happily agrees and Jun collects the instruments from the Jazz Club's room. They start playing the old song Musunde Hiraite together. Just as it finishes, the rain stops as the sun breaks through the clouds for the first time. When Yui sends Ui a new message that Yui misses her guitar, the three take a group picture to send it back to her.

Azusa got called by Yui

Azusa confused by Yui's call

Leaving the school behind, Jun takes a bus back home. While wondering if Jun will miss her stop because of her manga, Azusa suddenly receives a call from Yui and answers it. Yui tells her that the group is currently lost before being scolded by Mio in the background. The connection ends with no further explanation, leaving Azusa and Ui puzzled.

Keionbu key pendants

The club's key pendants

The next day at school, the seniors have returned from their field trip and Yui surprises Azusa with a sudden hug from behind. She drags her kouhai to the clubroom since the other members prepared something for her. Reuniting with the other members of the band, Azusa receives her souvenir, a keyring pendant which is shaped like the Japanese kana "bu/fu" (ぶ). The others show her theirs, Ritsu has the kana for "ke" (け), Mio for "i" (い), Mugi "o" (お) and Yui has the kana for "n" (ん). They wonder which word could be formed out of these kana and Ritsu proposes two gibberish words until Azusa mutters that is forms the word "keionbu" (けいおんぶ), which is the Japanese name of the Light Music Club. Touched, she asks the others if they want to practice now, but the idea is instantly rejected since they are still tired from their field trip, annoying Azusa as she joins them for tea and sweets.

Trivia

•The color of each member's key pendant corresponds to the character's colors which can be seen at the end of the episode, as the members became flowers.

•There is an error with Mio having Mugi's purple "o" (お) pendant and Mugi having Mio's blue "i" (い) pendant. This is corrected from the next episode "Rainy Season!" and onwards with Mugi and Mio having their correct pendants.

•The order of the kana needed to spell "keionbu" is who joined the club first to last. Ritsu joined the club first and became president, getting "ke", Mio joined second and got "i", and so on for the rest of the club members.
